Pushkar
Lake is an artificial lake in Rajasthan state of
western India. It is located near the town of Pushkar in
Ajmer District. The lake was created in the 12th century
when a dam was built across the headwaters of the Luni
River. Legend has it that the lake was created when a
lotus blossom dropped from the hand of God Brahma into
the Pushkar valley. It was also the site where the Sage
Vishwamitra meditating reputedly for thousands of years.
Thousands of pilgrims come to bathe in the waters of the
lake during the festival of Kaartika Poornima in
November.
The
legend about the Creator God, Bramha describes the
creation of this lake. When the demon Vajra Nabha killed
Brahma's children, he in turn struck him with his
weapon, a lotus flower.
Vajra
Nabha died with the impact, and the petals of the lotus
fell at three places. One of them is Pushkar, where a
lake sprung into being. Brahma is supposed to have
performed sacrifice at this lake on Kartik Purnima (the
full moon day of the Kartik month), hallowing the place.
Sacred to Brahma, Pushkar boasts of its temple dedicated
to him, which is the only one of its kind in the world.
A dip in the waters of Pushkar and worship at his temple
ensure salvation. So thousands flock to Pushkar to
observe the ritual on kartik Purnima, or on any of the
four days preceding it.
It is
semicircular lake around which there are 52 "Ghats". The max
depth of the lake is 10 mts. The lake is a holy place and is
known as the king of the "Trithas". The bath at Pushkar is
thought to be more important than at any other place. The
holy dip in this lake on kartika Purnima is thought to be
salvation giving.The man who BATHES in the Shukla Paksha of
Karitha month and has the Darshan of varah will not take
rebirth on this earth and enjoy the bliss of heaven. The
people who have a holy dip at the lake on karitha Purinama,
gain the fruit equal to do the Jap and Tap for one hundred
years. There are many yajna spots which cannot be counted
even by Vrihshpati, the teacher of the gods.
